Rolleyes  Who saw that coming?

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers made a move to shore up a depth issue at one position, while another was created.

The Panthers placed running back Jonathon Brooks on injured reserve Wednesday, after he left with a groin muscle injury in Sunday's win over the Falcons.

Brooks left the game late, after re-aggravating a problem that had bothered him during the period between the preseason and Week 1.

To fill the roster spot, the Panthers promoted safety Isaiah Simmons from the practice squad to the active roster.

Simmons had been promoted to the active roster for both games this season, as he's one of the team's top special teams players, but he was left off the initial 53 because of numbers issues elsewhere.

To backfill the practice squad, they brought back linebacker Maema Njongmeta.

He was here last season and throughout the offseason and adds depth at linebacker and special teams. The Panthers lost linebacker Claudin Cherelus early to a shoulder injury in Sunday's game, so numbers became an issue there as well.

Njongmeta was tied for fourth on the team with 10 special teams tackles last season.

— Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks will undergo core muscle surgery Thursday, which will sideline him for at least six weeks, according to a league source speaking on the condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the procedure. The team placed him on injured reserve Wednesday.

What it means for Brooks
Panthers coach Dave Canales said Brooks aggravated a groin injury he sustained late in training camp. He has nine carries for 30 yards this season, along with a 48-yard catch on an off-platform throw from Bryce Young in Week 1. While his surgery is not considered season-ending, this latest injury raises more questions about Brooks’ durability and GM Dan Morgan’s decision to draft him.

What it means for the Panthers
Carolina’s running back depth was already thin after Trevor Etienne was placed on IR (with a designation to return) with an ankle injury at roster cutdowns. Etienne is eligible to return after the team’s Week 5 bye. The only other healthy back behind Chuba Hubbard on the 53-man roster is A.J. Dillon, who is more of a power runner than a dual-threat back like Brooks or Etienne. Veteran running back Austin Ekeler is working out for the Panthers on Wednesday, according to a league source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The 31-year-old Ekeler played in two games for the Washington Commanders last year before tearing his Achilles.

Hate it for Brooks who seemed to work so hard to try to get back on the field.
Dan learning a painful lesson.  Now...go find some undrafted gem on a practice squad.

^^^That.  All points.

He is a RUNNING BACK.  If he tore a muscle in his groin, and is going to go under the knife to repair it, he will be out (or at least out of service) for a lot longer than six weeks.  Bag

I hate it for him.  Great kid.

I’m like everyone else,, we love the young man, hope he can play , think he can be good. But the facts are mounting. He can’t stay on the field. Do I hope for a miraculous return where he’s great? Sure, but none of us are expecting it.

We’ve all been waiting to see the burst of speed, open field runs. No one’s ever see them.

I hope to see more of A J Dillon ( to spell Chubba )
