Convince me I am wrong. Regardless of the other games if we beat the ugly Bucs twice we are the 4th seed… correct. We could lose to the Saints (again) and to Darnold and the Seahawks and beat the Bucs twice, we would own the head to head tie breaker and be in the playoffs.

Who would have imagined. Four games to play and we control our destiny.

Well ... not really. (I don't think..).

The Bucs have five games to play, the Panthers have four. If we beat the Bucs twice and lose to the Saints and the Seahawks, our season record would be 9-8. If the Bucs lose twice to us and beat the Saints, Atlanta, and the Dolphins, they would be 10-7. The Bucs would win the Division and would be the fourth seed. No tie-breaker necessary.

One of those teams have to beat the Bucs --- OR... the Panthers have to win another game or two against the Saints and the 'Hawks.  That's the way I see it anyway....  Old   Bag

And of course, we still have to beat the Bucs twice too....

But Hobbit strictly in the division the Bucs are 2-0 with the saints the falcons and two with us. They can beta the saints and falcons and lose two Toni’s and they will be 4-2 in the division.

We are 2-1 and can lose to the Saints but beat the Bucs twice and we will be 4-2 in the division.

We would have the head to head first tie breaker.

Is that not right. I don’t think overall record matters in this scenario?

You’re right about the tie-breaker, at least the first level. There are multiple tie-breakers that come into play if the teams remain tied.  However, think about it this way….. Say we beat all three Division teams twice. We have won SIX games. If we lose all the rest, our season W-L would be 6-11. Then the Bucs go on a run and win all of their remaining games. Their record would be 15-2. Yes, we would hold the tie-breaker, but it wouldn’t matter because there is no way a 6-11 team wins the Division over a 15-2 team. The only time the tie-breaker comes into play is when there is a tie in the overall record.

Unless I’m all screwed up…..

Never really researched as it normally doesn’t happen but overall record matters the most, then within the division record and the head to head with the other division team.

Always remember, total points scored is number 6 in tie breaker rules. So sportsmanship and taking a knee at the end of games isn’t the way the game should be played. I know it looks like it’s running up the score, but as long as the NFL uses it as a tiebreaker.
NFL playoff tiebreaker rules for regular season standings
Head-to-head record: The team with the better record in games between the tied teams wins the tiebreaker.
Division record: The team with the better record within its own division wins the tiebreaker.
Common games: The team with the better record in games played against common opponents wins the tiebreaker.
Strength of victory: The team that has beaten more playoff-caliber teams wins.
Combined ranking:

The combined ranking of the teams in points scored and points allowed.
Net points: The team with the higher number of total points scored minus total points allowed wins.

Coin toss: If all other tiebreakers fail, a coin toss will be used.

Think it won’t happen ? Many of us right here watch on the last Sunday of the 1999 season.

A well-known scenario at the end of the 1999 NFL season, where the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers were tied in record and competing for a wild-card spot, and the tiebreaker came down to net point differential in conference games.
In the final week of that season (Week 17), both teams played simultaneously and engaged in a widely discussed effort to run up the score in their respective games to gain an advantage in the points-based tiebreaker:
The Packers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 49-24.
The Panthers defeated the New Orleans Saints 45-13.
Green Bay ultimately finished with a slightly better net point differential in conference games, temporarily putting them ahead of Carolina in the tiebreaker.

It was scoreboard watching , with each team running up the score.

Sadly the late game knocked both the Panthers & Green Bay out of the last wild Card spot.

That was one great, exciting game to watch.

You know, I do not recall that situation.... I'm ashamed.  Bag

Yeah, the "tie-breaker" rules are a bit of a conundrum. I always remember the first four levels (head to head; division record; record against common opponents; and record against strength of schedule...), but that calculation against strength of schedule is a real quandary because of how 'strength of schedule' is calculated at the end.

Anyway OP, thanks for the Panthers history for 1999.. Worship

With the 15th picking the 2026 draft the Panthers select.

What, not a top five pick? Even top ten? Okay, maybe we can even make it to 16th!
