I know he says it's his last year, but I'm kind of surprised that HE asked to be released, after he asked the Panthers to trade him back to the Vikings.

Wonder if he would be willing to play "a bigger role" here over our final four games?  That's all he's going to get anywhere unless it's a playoff team, and he could help the Panthers become just that ;)  Big Grin

EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings on Monday waived veteran receiver Adam Thielen and issued the following statement from General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah:

"Last week, Adam's representation approached the team and asked if we would be willing to release Adam, expressing his desire to play a bigger role in the remaining weeks of what he has indicated will be his final NFL season. Following discussions through the weekend and out of respect for Adam, we have agreed to give him the opportunity to pursue more playing time elsewhere. Adam is one of the all-time great Vikings, and we wish him and his family continued success."

Thielen posted the following comments on social media:

Vikings Family —
Thank you
This is tremendously difficult for me to write and certainly not how any of us imagined this to go.
As a Minnesota native, putting on this uniform over the years and representing this community both on and off the field has always meant that much more to me. This team is in my bones, it's in my heart and it's part of my DNA. I will ALWAYS be a Minnesota Viking.
Since this past Spring, I knew this was going to be my last season playing in the National Football League. Given that, the Vikings allowed me the opportunity to go compete elsewhere for the last few weeks of my career.
Minnesota will always be our home, and we are incredibly grateful to the Wilf family, Kwesi, K.O. and everyone in the Vikings organization for bringing us back in August. This organization means the world to us from the top down and this locker room is filled with true professionals.
With gratitude and love and I'll be back to retire!

Because the move is after the trade deadline, Thielen will go through the waiver process through which another team can claim him. If he goes unclaimed, he will be cleared to sign with any team.

Entering the 2025 season with lofty goals (and knowing Jordan Addison would miss the first three games of the season), Minnesota brought Thielen back home before the season in a trade with Carolina.

The Vikings received a conditional 2026 seventh-round selection and a 2027 fifth-round selection in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round selection.

Thielen started four of 11 games in his second Vikings stint. He caught eight passes for 69 yards on 18 targets with a long of 19. Six of the eight catches resulted in first downs, and he also caught a 2-point conversion pass in Minnesota's Week 1 comeback win at Chicago. The Vikings, however, were unable to build off that early momentum.

Thielen, who is seven catches shy of 700 in his career, was inactive on Sunday when Minnesota visited Seattle and fell to 4-8 on the season.

WOW... This is an unexpected situation. Fbwow

I really feel bad for AT. He so wanted to finish strong for the Vikings but they cut him back to nothing. That's really a BAD situation. I would LOVE to see AT back with the Panthers to close out the season. He's a tremendous talent and deserves nothing but the best.

Also, the waiver thing makes a return to Carolina less probable. Vested veterans are not usually part of the waiver wire, just released. However this late in the season, all players are "waived" and all teams could claim him. So, would the Panthers be willing..?? And, even if, would a higher team in the waiver process take him first..?? AND, would AT even be interested..??

Lots of questions but few answers....

Hate that for AT. Was hoping he and his family would fall in love with the Carolinas so was not happy to see him go in the 1st place.

Bet he has heard from Bryce.

It seems , that once the Vikings got its full complement of receivers healthy after game 3 , he wasn’t going to be a part of their offense. Same thing could have happened here once Coker got healthy. ( that’s speculation though )
I read he went to the Vikings and asked for his release and wanted to try to catch on somewhere, where he’d be used more. From what I read he was not negative or angry about his roll with the Vikings ( still being the class act we grew to know )

I hope he catches on with some team where he can get back on the field. Late season injuries to a contender might be his way back onto the field.

He needs a receiver needy team headed for the playoffs,  Buffalo?  KC?

I hope the “nfl” meaning their teams will do the right thing for Adam allowing him to clear waivers (stupid rule in my opinion) and let him decide where and how to finish his career. He seems genuinely to be one of the good ones.

By the way I see Buffalo being that team. Possibly New England.

Funny thing, though, I have seen a BUNCH of different folks talking about the possibility of him coming back here. He asked to go back to the team who drafted him so that he could retire there. The team SCREWED HIM. He was 100% healthy last week and was listed as inactive.

He doesn't want to ride the bench his last five or six games. He wants to go out like the Legend that he is.

Let the boy play football! We still love you, Adam, come on HOME!

Latest word on the street...

Has Adam Thielen claimed off of waivers by the Steelers. Nothing official yet, but according to a "source" as quoted by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

See the article on a separate thread.
