CHARLOTTE — The Panthers had a decision to make on quarterback Bryce Young this offseason, but it was an easy one.

General manager Dan Morgan said at a press conference on Tuesday that the team planned to pick up the fifth-year option on Young.

"Bryce has shown flashes of greatness this year against high level competition," Morgan said Tuesday after announcing the decision to pick up the option.

That will keep him here through the 2027 season, which was an easy call after the season he just had. He led the Panthers to their first NFC South title and home playoff game in a decade.

Young had a career season, setting new highs in everything from passing yards (3,011), touchdowns (23), completion percentage (63.6), to passer rating (87.8).

He also had six of his 12 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime this year, and that 12 remains the most of any quarterback in the league since 2023, when he entered the league.

He showed that late-game proficiency in a number of ways. In one-score games, his 101.2 passer rating was third in the league, trailing just a couple of guys named Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. His 3.8 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the second half of games was in the top five of the league, and he led the league in passing yards on fourth downs (285).

And since going for fourth downs (their 27 conversions led the league) is such a big part of their offensive philosophy, that's a good thing to be good at.

"I think Bryce did a great job this year and just really excited about moving forward and him still developing chemistry with our receivers, and just the pieces around him that we had," Morgan continued.

"If you look at Bryce on a day to day basis out there, his work ethic out there, his ability to command the huddle out there, take control of the line of scrimmage, make the proper checks, make the proper protection calls, and then really having that translate into Sunday or Saturday or whenever we play.

"I just felt like he had a lot more command out there this year, and really just kind of coming into his own and getting better every week, and just attacking every day. And that's really all you can ask for just from any player, let alone your quarterback."

The first overall pick in the 2023 draft, he's now under contract for the next two seasons, at a time when they're developing the passing game around a young receiving corps.

He'll be throwing to Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker, and Xavier Legette throughout that time, along with Jimmy Horn Jr.. And with Coker going off in the Rams game and McMillan leading all rookie receivers this year, that seems like a good place to continue to build.

"It was unbelievable to watch the guys, just really a culmination of the work that's been happening, behind the scenes at practice, the conversations in the hallways, you know, in meeting rooms, and Bryce right at the center of all that," Panthers head coach Dave Canales said. "We've needed that time on task for this group, and then to see it come alive in the game and be something that we could count on and depend on, to play a really good Rams team here, was fantastic and to see their energy to see them not, shy away from the moment, but to attack it and find wins along the way."

His fellow captain, Derrick Brown, also said that Young has proven this year that he can play and can lead.

"Man, Bryce has had a damn good year," Brown said. "So many people rag on him, and s---, if it was easy, everybody would play quarterback in the league, but that ain't quite the case.

"So man, I'm just proud of him and his growth throughout the year, standing tall in front of the team, no matter if it was when we got beat in New England, coming to the locker room, we got something to say. I mean, we get it every single week."

The five foot nine inch tall, weak armed qb who went 0-4 in the final drive of the year … gets 26 plus million and we will still need a QB. Getting into the playoffs where he completed 52% of his passes doesn’t mean we still don’t need a qb. Just my opinion.

Yep...

EXACTLY

I am NOT a fan of exercising the 5th Year Option for (almost) any player. It costs a lot of money for largely unproven players (in most cases), and LOCKS in their fourth AND fifth years as fully guaranteed including for injuries. The proof is our own Ekwonu. We "locked" him up in April and now we're on the hook for literally millions of dollars cap hit and he is out, probably for all of next year while we pay $17.5M for nothing. That's money that we don't have available for our cap PLUS we still have to find (pay) someone to take his place.  Lose/lose...

I hear you guys, I agree on some points. But what else do you do? There aren’t any franchise QBs hitting the market right now, anyone we pickup are gonna be gone, and it’s gonna cost the same. At least with Bryce, we are only committed to one more year, any other QB is going to want a multi year deal. Then we are in the same boat.

I understand and AGREE with Bryce’s shortcomings. Even some of you even wanting to draft another QB this season.

I personally feel out shortcomings on defense, linebackers, edge rushers , out weigh our need to possibly draft a QB or free agent.

Yes Andy Dalton needs to be replaced.

Icky might need to be replaced due to surgery. I keep hearing we still need another WR since Legette isn’t panning out .

I’m hoping we spend big in free agency at Linebacker and edge rusher .
Devin Lloyd , or Jaelin Phillips at linebacker,, maybe Trey Hindrickson ( everyone wants to get paid that’s in Cinn ) at edge , coming off a pelvic injury, but that might bring his price down . We need a veteran at these positions IMHO .

BCF - What you say is true as long as you just drive within those lanes. But, is there another way to approach this?? Is it possible to achieve short term stability and long term responsibility without mortgaging the future or stopping growth right now?? Sure, we want to see our team turn into a Phoenix. Sort of "rise from the ashes" of the last 7-8 years. Can we do that with what we currently have at QB.?? You asked "What else do you do?"

Let me offer something here:  Let's not get hyper-focused on 'Long-term Bryce.' Yes, in the short term we need to have a capable QB (Bryce - maybe?) as we continue our pursuit of relevancy. This does NOT mean we should mortgage our year to year plans to "pay" a QB that seems "questionable" at best. First, we need to understand that BY is already 'getting paid.' His contract is for a lot more than rookie minimum. He is currently under a "guaranteed" 4 year $38M contract. That's roughly $9.5M per year AS A ROOKIE.  If (when?? - SMDH..) he gets the 5th year tender, he will receive about $27M for one additional year. That is NOT crazy high for a QB in today's market, but it's three times (3X) what he's making now. So, is BY worth three times his current salary.??? That option also comes with an additional guarantee. That 5th year option also locks his 4th year (2026 (next year)) as "fully guaranteed" against ALL happenings. So, for the next two years the Panthers are "locked" into paying BY about $37-38M with NO guarantee that he will even play.

If Bryce gets hurt, he still gets paid every cent under that option and it ALL counts toward the cap. Injury guarantees are NOT a mandatory thing. The players contracts can be covered for injury, but their contract usually has an injury clause that separates "guaranteed" money from "fully guaranteed" money.  SO... Why not skip the 5th year option. Instead extend BY at a currently acceptable rate based on what he is worth. Maybe an additional two years starting around $15-20M in 2027, then maybe $24-27M in 2028.  If he really "raises the bar" next year, then those numbers could be higher. The contract could have performance guarantees built in, so BY could make additional money IF (and ONLY IF..) he met or exceeded the performance goals. In other words, pay the man as long as he PERFORMS. If not, then he gets what the contract specifies.  If Bryce does not want to sign (agree) to the new contract, then he can play out his current contract and would be a free agent after next year.... Let some other team worry about his lackluster performance.

I realize that not everyone will agree with this approach. IMHO, too many folks seem to believe that "PAY THE MAN" is a requirement for everyone who plays the game. Forget THAT. Players deserve to be comfortable. They deserve a reasonably generous salary commensurate with their ability, their performance, and their value to the team. At least that's the way it SHOULD be.

The Panthers have already (this year) been bitten by the 5th year "bug". Ekwonu is down with a severe injury that will likely keep him out all of next year. Sure, he deserves the best care and his current salary until the end of his contract. But... NOW, the Panthers are on the hook for this year plus next year at the current "tag" rate for OTs (about $17.5M) that counts against the cap, for which we will get NOTHING -- AND, we still have to sign another OT to take his place.

I don't know what you folks think, but there's something wrong with this.....
