This gives some much-needed veteran presence at the position.

Reports: Panthers agree to terms with linebacker Bobby Okereke

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers kept a competition at linebacker going until the end of the preseason.

And then they found a more experienced option before cuts.

According to multiple reports, the Panthers have agreed to terms with veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke on a one-year deal.

The 30-year-old Okereke (pronounced oh-ker-uh-KAY) spent the last three years with the Giants, after his first four with the Colts.

Originally a third-round pick from Stanford, he's appeared in 110 games and started 95.

He's become one of the more productive inside linebackers in the league, with at least 132 tackles in four of the last five seasons, including a team-high 143 last year.

He has 805 career tackles, along with 7.5 sacks, seven interceptions, 11 forced fumbles, and eight fumble recoveries.

Throughout the preseason, the Panthers let Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus compete for the starting job next to Devin Lloyd, including Friday night when they were the only starters to appear in the final preseason game. But Wallace and Cherelus have just 26 career starts between them, 20 of those by Wallace.

Okereke, an Eagle Scout, also adds some ballast to a still-young defense. He was a captain all three years with the Giants, where he was also the team's Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee.

The Panthers have to be at the league limit of 53 players by 6 p.m. Sunday. And once his signing becomes official, they'd have to make a corresponding move since the roster is at 91 now.

This is strange…. I wonder why the Giants let him go.?? With that history, I wonder if there’s something in his background, health, etc., etc.. Lots of production, 3 years as a Captain, Peyton MOY nominee …. Something about this seems … off.??
Hope it works out..!!

I heard the same thing.  IMO it's a good pickup, especially on a one year deal to see what he has left in the tank.

His PFF coverage grade of 65.2 ranked 22nd among 88 qualified linebackers. His run-defense grade of 46.2 ranked 81st at the position. His pass-rush grade of 65.5 ranked 40th among qualified linebackers!

I can't see why anyone would be excited. His production levels have decreased over the past couple years, hence one of the reasons he is no longer with the Giants. I mean it's an okay signing but I think more than anything it shows the reach we had in Wallace was simply another mistake.

YEAH... This goes back to something we have discussed several times on the forum...

The Panthers have "Agreed To Terms" with Bobby Okereke -- They have NOT signed him.... YET.

That explains why he was not listed on the roster. He was not shown as a "cut" or "release". He was not listed on the Panthers Transaction page. And he is not currently accounted for. The Panthers simply do not have to account for him because he is not under contract. When he gets to Charlotte and signs his contract, the Panthers will THEN have to move someone to make room for him.  It's just like picking up someone from another team's cut list. It'll happen, I'm sure. And we'll have to move some other players at that time to make room.

Nah, not really.
Sometimes these reporters / websites just throw stuff — hoping something will stick. They don’t pay attention to details. It usually works, but sometimes, like this, weird stuff can happen. It’s not a big deal. It’ll all shake out.

It's official:

https://www.panthers.com/news/panthers-s...ster-moves

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers made it official Monday afternoon, adding experience and productivity to the linebacker position.

Bobby Okereke signed his one-year deal Monday, beginning a quick ramp-up to the regular season.

The 30-year-old Okereke spent the last three years with the Giants (all as a team captain), after his first four with the Colts.

Here, he joins Devin Lloyd in the middle of an improved defense, which also saw the acquisition of pass-rusher Jaelan Phillips.
