Brooke Cersosimo of NFL Media reports Panthers LB Thomas Davis will retire after next season.

Davis said earlier this week that he expected to take on a lesser role next year and has now confirmed that 2018 will be his 14th and final NFL season. A first-round pick of the Panthers in 2005, has been a productive player in the league for over a decade, earning a pair of All-Pro selections along the way. He's shown great resiliency throughout his career, overcoming three ACL tears and countless other injuries. Davis remained an effective player in 2017, earning PFF's No. 10 grade among 4-3 outside linebackers.

To be expected and the reason I want to draft a LB this year.  Wouldn't make TD any happier if the Panthers took LB Roquan Smith from UGA.  Same knock as TD coming out, undersized, but has a ton of talent.

We are very thin already at LB.  TD leaving and Luke a head bump away from retirement and nothing behind them already

Hopefully we can get someone that comes close to matching his skills, but highly doubt we can replace his "heart". Guys like him and Luke don't come along too often.

Best wishes, TD!  You have been a class act and a HUGE part of this team these past years.  Congratulations, and I hope your last year is all you expect it to be! :headbang:

So is the lesser role letting Shaq rotate and play his position a bit?  If so, we are going to need a playmaker at LB.  FA would have to be it because at 24, don't think there will be a LB from the draft that can step in during his rookie season

Well, as long as TD stays healthy we should be "Okay" this year. We still need another LB that can play outside, strong or weak.... Personally, I am not really enthused about Gachkar or Paysinger....although truthfully neither one really played for us this past year. When TD leaves that will leave a BIG hole. With Mayo backing up the Mike, there is really no one available who has been "tested" under fire (as of right now..). This is the year we have to move on a good quality outside backer we need the depth AND we will need the first line guy in one more year.

So the question is.... Can Mayo play outside if he had to do so.??  AND... how good are Paysinger and Gachkar.?? If we are in Nickel, there is less of a problem...unless we have Shaq playing the Nickel... OMG...my head hurts. Munnerlyn is going to have to step up....

Didn’t we just cut Paysinger? Either way, not the answer. Hopefully address in the draft.

Think Mayo is the short term answer. With Jones a close second!

Anyway, we have six (6) LBs on the roster.... Davis; Kuechly; Shaq; Mayo; Jacobs; and Gachkar....

Jacobs and Gachkar are non-starters.... Backups or ST guys only (at least so far...).  Son in our base defense, we have one real backup ready to play and that is Mayo. When Davis leaves next year, we will have no one to play OUTSIDE since Mayo is first and foremost a Mike backer. I like Mayo a lot.. He can play the position and serves well as Luke's backup. But without Davis there is no one to play outside in a base 4-3. We need at least one more outside backer to get ready for 2019....
