Donte Stallworth's return to the NFL will come in February, but his time with the Browns is likely drawing short.
What would your feelings/reactions be if the Panthers signed Donte' Stallworth?

Stallworth? Donte Stallworth's Browns Tenure Likely Drawing To A Close as Suspension Ends:
Scott Shaw / The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have no intention of bringing back receiver Donte' Stallworth when his one-year suspension is lifted by Commissioner Roger Goodell after the Super Bowl.

It will be the first major decision on a player to be made by the new Browns regime of President Mike Holmgren and General Manager Tom Heckert, and it will not be a hard one.

Stallworth was suspended on Aug. 13 after pleading guilty to DUI/manslaughter, a second-degree felony in Florida, as a result of striking and killing pedestrian Mario Reyes while under the influence of alcohol on March 14.

Goodell did the Browns a favor by suspending Stallworth for the season because it saved the Browns about $7.6 million of room on their 2009 salary cap.

The team, however, was legally bound to pay Stallworth a $4.5 million bonus, which he earned by being on the team's roster on March 13 -- the day before the accident. The final payment of that bonus was due on Jan. 10.

It is believed that most, if not all, of Stallworth's bonus money was used to pay the family of Reyes in a plea-bargain agreement with Florida prosecutors that avoided a lengthy jail term. He served 24 days in prison.

If the Browns re-instated Stallworth, his contract calls for another $1 million roster bonus on March 18 and a base salary in 2010 of $2.775 million. There are other bonuses worth $550,000 if Stallworth played the whole season.

So that's not going to happen.

Stallworth had about $25.2 million left on his Browns contract through 2014. He probably wasn't going to ever see all that money, even if the accident hadn't occurred.

There would be no impact on the salary cap by releasing him because the league is expected to abolish the salary cap system in March as a result of failed negotiations to extend the current labor agreement.

If by some unexpected development the league reaches an agreement and the salary cap system is maintained, Stallworth would count only $435,000 on the Browns' 2010 cap if released.

But he didn't come away empty-handed.

In addition to the $4.5 million roster bonus paid in 2009, Stallworth received a $4.5 million signing bonus in 2008. His base salary in '08 was $605,000. So the Browns paid Stallworth $9.605 million for one season. He played in 11 games and had 17 catches for 170 yards and one touchdown.

I don't think vehicular manslaughter fits the Panthers' idea of high character.

I personally think there are better choices for free agents the Panthers could bring in.

As far as the charges-- In society we are innocent until proven guilty-- but not really. If someone is arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter, it does not matter the circumstances, or even if the charges were dropped, they are still guilty! Such is the world.

Stallworth hit a guy running across the street in the middle of the night-- any of us could have done that. Personally I am surprised it does not happen more often.

A girl almost got hit running across the snow by a car in front of me during our "blizzard" a couple weeks ago. The guy in front of me would have gotten vehicular manslaughter or similar, although it would have been her fault for being stupid.

The charges happened simply because he had a few drinks and because he is a high profile player.

Anyway, this should have nothing to do with whether the Panthers bring him to Charlotte.

For money, trades, ability, there are simply better choices out there.

Donte was DUI man. He got off easy. Could it be anyone? Yes, if you drive while intoxicated. DUI has not effected my life except for there was a high school girl in my town whose car was hit head on by a drunk driver. She was in the passenger seat without a seat belt and was thrown from the car. She was a parapelegic in a wheel chair and had undecipherable speech after that incident. You get in a car drunk and you are a loaded weapon. It is reckless endangerment.

Just looking at him as a player, he's really not all that great. He's had a season or 2 where he's looked good but he's very injury prone and just disappears way too much.

This is what I was talking about--yea the guy had a DUI, but he was just on the limit, and the camera showed the guy dart across the screen at the dumbest possible time.

A lot of us would have hit him stone sober--

What Mark was saying is what I was trying to say though--

Donte is not that great of a wide receiver, or has not been in quite some time.

I would take Lance Moore over him in a heart beat, and he is going to be available. Antonio Bryant, and hoard of 2nd tier guys that I think are better too.

Shoot-- Jason Avant I think is available, he is pretty good. Chris Chambers will be available on the cheap--and I think he would be PERFECT for the Panthers--ready to play, tough, run blocks, goes downfield, big target.

Donte is not a great option-- the DUI is just salt on the wound.
