HOT TOPIC: The last thing Kenny Moore wanted to see was his best friend on the football team break an arm during the offseason.

But Steve Smith’s bad break could lead to a good break for Moore.

With Smith on the sidelines Moore has been running with the first-team offense along with Dwayne Jarrett and has been exceptional through the first two days of camp.

“It’s an opportunity for me to come in and make plays and show them that I can really do it with the starters,” said Moore, a Charlotte native who starred at Butler High. “It’s exciting for me.”

Moore faces some tough competition this summer.

You have to figure Smith, third-round draft picks Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards, and spoecial teams standout Wallace Wright are locks to make the roster possibly leaving Moore, Jarrett, Charly Martin and Trent Guy to fight over one spot.

Moore admits he’s looked at the numbers, but said his focus is on doing the best he can do and playing well enough so that coaches can’t cut him.

And so far so good.

Moore has been fluid running routes and shown great hands.

“I always believe in my ability and what I do,” Moore said. “As a player and a receiver you always look and you think, ‘Man we only kept four receivers at the end of last year.’ That’s always in your head. But at the end of the day you have to make plays. I believe my best should be good enough. If I continue to take advantage of my opportunities and come out and compete every day hopefully that will be enough for the coaches.”

There’s nowhere else Moore would rather be than in Carolina.

Moore grew up in Charlotte and Smith, who broke into the league when he was a high school sophomore, was his idol. He even kept a photo of Smith as his screensaver on his personal computer.

“And now he’s a guy I’m getting tips from,” laughed Moore, who had six catches for 59 yards in limited playing time last season for the Panthers. “I’m really tuned in to what he has to say. I take in all of the advice he’s given me and try to learn from it.”

He knows the more he can do the better chance he has of sticking around.

For that reason he’s still trying to petition coaches to give him another chance to return punts, something he struggled with in 2009. Moore had a costly fumble in the preseason and was held to 4 yards on two punt returns in the regular season.

“I’m still trying to get them to believe in me a little more,” Moore said.

As for the receiver position, coach John Fox called it “competitive,” but admits he’s been impressed by Moore.

“Right now he’s earned it (running with the first team),” Fox said. “We have a lot of competition at that position and a lot of young people who are learning. We’ll evaluate that practice by practice.”

INSIDE THE GAME: There’s been a lot of talk about how the Panthers plan to use rookie Eric Norwood this season.

Norwood excelled as a pass rusher last season at South Carolina, but at 241 pounds he’s considered too small to be an every down defensive end in the NFL. The Panthers are still working on the best way to use Norwood’s skills, but Fox said right now his base position is linebacker.

“We'll see how that goes,” Fox said. “He spent a lot more time with his hand in the dirt in college. He definitely has those skills, so he can be a designated pass rusher as well as an every down linebacker and we'll evaluate that as we move forward.”

None of matters to Norwood, who said just being at training camp is “a dream come true.”

“This is what I’ve worked for,” he said. "I'll do whatever they want."

NOTABLE: Here's the scoop on OG Duke Robinson. He came into camp overweight and out of shape and the Panthers won't put him on the practice field until they feel like he's ready to go. He's not there yet and remains on active-PUP after the first two days.

"We're being precautionary there with some weight and conditioning and when he meets those (goals) he'll be out there," Fox said.

Fox said Robinson won't necessarily have to pass a conditioning test to get on the field as DT Albert Haynesworth apparently needs to do in Washington.

Coming into camp Robinson had a chance to compete for a starting spot at right guard, but that may be gone now.

When asked if he's disappointed Robinson didn't come into camp in shape, Fox replied, "We've had guys that didn't make weight in camp and that doesn't necessarily define what kind of player they will be or what type of year they're going to have. Right now he's got a little work to do."

WHO IMPRESSED: Rookie WR Brandon LaFell made an impressive one-handed catch behind his head along the sidelines during Friday’s full-pad practice, drawings oohs from the afternoon crowd. That's an encouraging sign from a guy who could wind up as the No. 2 receiver providing he can beat out Jarrett. LaFell is steady and certainly looks the part of a viable No. 2 receiving threat.

WHO DIDN'T: Nobody really stood out as having a bad practice on Friday, but Dexter Jackson did get embarrassed by Richard Marshall running down punts. Twice Marshall manhandled Jackson at the line of scrimmage, once pushing him well out of bounds and completely out of the play.

At some point the Panthers are going to have to pay Marshall. But he may have jump in line behind DeAngelo Williams, Ryan Kalil and Thomas Davis, all of whom will be unrestricted free agents after the season.

PLAY OF THE DAY: In one of the Moore beautifully executed plays Friday, Matt hooked up with Kenny on 46-yard bomb down the right sideline during one-on-one drills. Kenny beat CB Chris Gamble by a foot on the play and made a great catch in the end zone. (It should be noted, however, that’s about the only time Gamble has been beat since the start of camp.)

INJURY REPORT: DE Charles Johnson, LB Jamar Williams and RB Tyrell Sutton sat out practice. Sutton has a sore calf while the others tweaked their hamstring. Nothing serious.

Also, WR Charly Moore left practice after injuring his finger. He might have broken something, but we'll know more later. Too bad. He was playing well.

Coach John Fox said he expects four of the six guys on the active-PUP list – RB Jonathan Stewart, DT Louis Leonard, OG Duke Robinson and OT Jeff Otah -- to practice before the team breaks camp on Aug. 18.

DEPTH CHART WATCH: With Johnson sitting out, DE Everette Brown has stepped up and done a nice job during practice.

Brown will be one of the guys counted on to step up and fill in for Julius Peppers, who averaged more than 10 sacks per season during his eight years in Carolina.

“I look at that as good pressure and I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Brown said of replacing Peppers. “But in that it’s going to take all four guys on the line. It’s going to take high intensity and guys wanting to make plays. It all starts up front.”

THEY SAID IT: Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams when asked if he thinks the tailbacks are going to have to carry the load this year because Moore is such a young quarterback: “No, I don't think we are. When our number's called we want to answer that call. But you've got to understand something about Matt Moore – he won six games for us, went 6-2. When you say that it's tough for me to understand that, because I've played with him for three years. I think he has more than just an arm and a head. I think he's going to get us real far this year.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The Panthers are back on their two-a-day schedule tomorrow, practicing at 9:10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The night practice will be at Gibbs Stadium, the first time the team has practiced at Wofford College's home stadium during the Fox era.

We are actually in Spartanburg right now, getting ready for the 2nd practice at Gibbs.

Early morning updates:
Matt Moore continues to smoke the rest of the quarterbacks, he is far and away the most decisive and flashy of the bunch. It's also worth noting that Moore made one of the very few, if not only outstanding deep end-zone passes. Not that we could see who caught it because the Panthers like to play away from the hill on the back field, but indeed, he proved his status at least for one practice.

Jimmy Clausen threw one pick and several low darts as the #2 quarterback(I label him #2 because he was 2nd in line behind Moore taking snaps all day), he has a tendency to hold the ball and check down. Apparently he is having trouble making reads and finding holes in the defense downfield. Even his check downs are far from sharp.
Hunter and Pikes snaps were few and far between, nothing special to report.

Jeff King was Moore's favored target, he made a few short, nice grabs. Kenny Moore seemed to be the preferred target of every QB.

Gamble remains the leader of the defensive secondary, looked the most sharp of the bunch with his footwork in solo drills. Munnerlyn continues to see an outstanding amount of playing time, I was surprised to see him in so many of the team drills.

Baker, for what little work he did, was a bit underwhelming in his kicking range and accuracy, not sure honestly how much can be taken from that observation however as we were not privy to any situational drill he may have been assigned to. Kasay was sharp on the few field goals we saw him kick, however none from distance, practically all in the 30yd range if not less.

Armanti Edwards was first in line for punt/kick return drills, after Armanti came Goodson, then I believe Brandon LaFell and then Dexter Jackson. Nothing of note could be determined by these drills however as they were just individual fielding drills with no contact or coverage/blocking participation from the rest of the special teams unit. We were surprised to learn LaFell was on return duty after we looked back over some photos.

Smith did next to nothing except sign autographs quite a bit more than in past years. I asked for him to sign my SI from 2005 and he denied.
Armanti did a lot of signing, all you AppSt guys get down here and get your sig.
Everette Brown signed a bunch, although I decided against trying to butt in and get one from him.
Clausen signed a bit, as did DeAngelo Williams.
Jeff King signed before and after practice quite a bit, as well as Tank Tyler. Captain Munnerlyn and Eric Norwood both signed quite a bit, I decided to put them on one of my nice Panther hats side-by-side with one another and Travelle Wharton I got from another year. Nice piece it is now with all Gamecock/Panther sigs.

Thanks for the updates, Jurspin!

It still annoys the heck out of me that Duke Robinson showed up fat and out of shape. What was he thinking?

Evening practice update*back to football party*

Good close-up scrimmages throughout a 2hr practice tonight at Gibbs Stadium(moved to Wofford's official game field for a back to football party event the Panthers hosted tonight).

Hunter Cantwell took over as the #2 guy behind center in the night session. He was altogether unspectacular however.

Jimmy Clausen took #3 honors and actually made one nice pass downfield between three defenders late in the practice, he was sharper than earlier in the day with his short game but still continued to check down more than I would have preferred to see from a guy of his notoriety. One particularly awful play, perhaps the ugliest of the night, was a scramble up the middle by Clausen which led to a pass down the middle of the field essentially targeting nobody, the pass landed at least 20 yards away from any receiver. Yeah, it was a ridiculous thing to see.

Matt Moore continued as the #1...obviously. Moore actually threw a pick tonight on a deep pass to the end zone which lacked a bit of air under it. Forgive me for forgetting some of the receivers/corners involved in these plays but needless to say, it was a pretty bad throw on Moore. However, he still distinguished himself time and again.

It took the Panthers some time after their scheduled start time of 6:30 to get geared up, but their first full team scrimmage was the most exciting of the night. In a full 11-on-11, three-down, all passing scenario, Moore easily led the 1st team from the Panthers' 20 to midfield before giving way to Hunter Cantwell.
Cantwell threw a solid strike to the end zone..I believe three plays later. Defense was not sharp early, needless to say.

DeAngelo looked as sharp as always, time and again busting through for big gains in 11-on-11 drills, often untouched in a hand-check scenario.

Goodson continued to flash from the tailback spot, however, he is a bit slower in his open field cutting than I would like to see for a guy known primarily for his speed.

Tyrell Sutton and Jonathan Stewart once again did not participate.

A lot of work for the receivers and kick returners tonight, even some full special teams, non-contact drills. Once again Armanti, LaFell, Goodson and Jackson participated.

Dexter showed nothing as a receiver, Armanti made one nice grab in coverage on a low and inside slot position route. Kenny Moore continued to be a favorite target and there appeared to be more variety in the use of tight ends this evening, all had their moments, especially Barnidge who continued to show his adeptness deep downfield routes.

Not much signing tonight, for those who care. I only add this tid-bit for those of you who care about picking up sigs.

John Fox signed a significant amount, I managed to get him to sign my 2003 NFC division champs hat from waaay back. Dexter Jackson and Armanti once again signed many, many autographs.
Steve Smith and D. Williams rounded out the good guys who hung back and gave back to the fans. Not too happy with Smith right now in that regard...but give him his props for signing for SOME people....see my previous post if you're confused at my animosity here :P

MAYBE an update from Sunday's practice, we haven't decided if we will stick around for it yet or not.

LaFell certainly impressed in the afternoon practices, asides from K. Moore and the tight end trio, LaFell was the most targeted guy on the field and we did not once witness a mistake on his part.

Sorry, no updates from today's practice to come, we decided to head home rather than wait around until 3:00 and potentially bad weather.

I agree 100%! I'm so sick of everyone in the media (especially ESPN during the draft) acting like Matt Moore is an after thought. Granted, he has a lot more to prove, but everything I've seen has made me pretty confident that he can continue to play well and improve.

Yup..every show I have watched has basically named Clausen as the Man in Carolina...Dont get me wrong I hope Clausen is every bit as good as he has been made out to be..But as of right now Matt is better. Hes been here long enough, the team knows him, obviously the team likes him, he knows the playbook and his WR's, and he has waited his turn.

Unless Moore comes out and stinks up the place I don't see Clausen getting a start at all this season.

He won't. Moore is our man. I think he is the QB that we have been looking for and had all along. I hate to say this as I was and still am a big fan of Delhomme but his broken finger might have been the best thing that could have happened to us last season.
